ICS ZONAL ACTIVITIES

 

There are four zones of Indian Chest Society. The Chairpersons of each zone as follows:

  • 1. Dr. Rupak Kumar Ghosh - Chairperson East Zone
  • 2. Dr. N.K. Jain - Chairperson West Zone
  • 3. Dr. Surya Kant - Chairperson North Zone
  • 4. Dr. C. Ravindran - Chairperson South Zone

 

 

 

 



Activities of Indian Chest Society (North Zone) from April 2011-June 2011

 World Asthma Day 2011 (02/05/2011)

1.    Press Conference on 1st May 2011 to create awareness in the Society.

 

2-An Asthma Awareness Rally was organized at Ram Manohar Lohia Park Gomati Nagar Lucknow in the morning of  2nd May 2011,  PFT and Spirometery was done on morning walkers of Park.

   

3- A Free Asthma Camp was organized in the Department of Pulmonary Medicine on 3rd May 2011, about 300 patients were subjected for PFT evaluation and free medicines were distributed to 247 patients.

 4- A free Asthma Camp was organized on 7th May 2011 at IMA,     Lucknow.

 

2-World No Tobacco Day- Dr. Surya Kant and Dr. Ajay Kumar Verma       delivered the Public Lecture on Health Hazards of Smoking and Smoking Cessation at the  office of Tata Indicom Lucknow, Spirometery of 20 person was performed on this occasion and people were consulted and advised for Smoking Cessation

ICS (South Zone) ACTIVITY FOR 2010

Southern zone has conducted south zone CME & Governing body meeting on 21 March 2010 at Golconda hotel, Hyderabad.

The governing body meeting was attended by ICS president Dr. Katiyar, Dr J.K Samaria Secretary ICS, Dr. Rohini V. Chowgule, Dr. Kandala Venu South Zone Chairperson, Dr. A.G. Ghoshal, Dr P. Bhattacharyya, Dr. D.J. Roy,  Dr. Vijayalakshmi Thanasekaraan, Dr. N.K. Jain, Dr. Virendra Singh, Dr. M. Sabir, Dr. Dheeraj Gupta etc..

Governing Body has conducted proceedings in the morning.In the afternoon session CME was conducted 4 topics were covered by various speakers. Vijayalakshmi Thanasekaraan spoke on sleep disorders, Dr. Virendra Singh spoke on asthma, Indian prospective, Dr. A.G. Ghoshal spoke on COPD and Dr Ajeet Vig spoke on Asthma management.

Another CME was organised at Chennai with the educational grand support of Dr. Redd’y Lab. by  Dr. Mark Fitzgerald, Chairman GINA Scientific Committee. Dr Mark Fitzgerald is a Consultant Respiratory Physician and Head of Respiratory Medicine Division at Vancouver General Hospital, USA at different zones. Around 80 doctors were attended and it was very successful. Dr Kandala Venu was chaired and Dr. Vijayalakshmi Thanasekaraan was co-chaired.

Another CME programme is proposed to be organized with again unconditional grant from Dr. Reddy’s Lab and this time speaker is Prof. Peter Calverly. Peter Calverly is the Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the University of Liverpool, and Honorary Consultant Physician at University Hospital Aintree, Liverpool. He trained at the University of Edinburgh. He is a Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Physicians in both London and Edinburgh. He is an executive member of the WHO/NHLBI GOLD initiative and has also served as President of the British Thoracic Society. Professor Calverley is an Associate Editor of Thorax .His main research interests are the patho-physiology and management of COPD and sleep and breathing disorders. He has published extensively in these areas including a recent second edition of his major textbook on this subject, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (jointly edited with Professors McNee, Rennard and Pride). Dr. Kandala Venu was chaired and Dr. Satish had co-chaired. Around 100 doctors were attended and that CME was successful.



ICS (West Zone) ACTIVITY FOR 2010

The following activities wore done in West Zone ICS) by the state of Rajasthan.

  • 1. 9th January 2010- Guest lecture on basics of fluid therapy by Dr. Sanjay Pandya, Nephrologist from Rajkot, Gujarat and chaired by Dr.     L.C.Sharma.
  • 2. 5th to 7th March 2010  a spirometry technician training programme was conducted at Asthma Bhavan in which 25 technician were     trained.
  • 3. 14th October 2010 on World Spirometry Day, Spirometry testing was done in the following four groups:
    • Outdoor patients of respiratory disease at Chest Hospital, Jaipur- 15 out of 35 patients tested had evidence of airflow obstruction.
    • Attendants of Outdoor patients at Chest Hospital, Jaipur- 10 out of the 25 tested had evidence of airflow obstruction.
    • Policemen at Yadgar- 26 out of 109 policemen tested had airflow obstruction.
    • Normal population at Reliance Fresh- 8 out of 20 people tested had airflow obstruction.
  • 4. 30th October 2010-Guest lecture by Dr. Peter Calverly, executive member of the WHO/NLBI GOLD on 'Improving Outcomes in COPD' at SMS Convention centre, Hotel Ramagh Palace,Jaipur and was chaired by Dr. N.K.Jain and Dr. Virendra Singh.


In addition to these activities carried out in the state of Rajasthan other activity carried out in West Zone is as follows:

  • 15th August 2010 - Guest lecture by Mark Fitzgerald, chief of GINA scientific committee at Mumbai.

I have no further information about the activities carried by the other states of the West Zone of the ICS namely Maharshtra, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Gujurat. In my opinion a co-ordinator should be appointed from each of the state in a zone and for this a resolution should be passed in the general body meeting of the ICS.
